It’s not about me, it is fair. I have enough & I’ll give you my share. Can’t you see. I am alive & I have more than I need…
As a child of the 80’s where excess and greed was the game, the idea of not having enough was prominent. Inequality and the survival instinct driving separation and the concept of the individual took centre stage.
We started to lose our sense of community and become more individually focused, but not on how to find peace, instead it was “what about me?” The song of that title became a huge hit and people felt inadequate, that they weren’t worth much unless they had excess and desired more to satisfy that aching hole.
Yet it was never enough. The hole cannot be filled with stuff. It can’t be filled with success or achievements, being the “best”… so we keep on filling it. Trying harder and harder and feeling more like a failure.
The concept of self worth was an illusion in the first place.
The hole cannot be filled because we are all one. No one is more or less special. No one is more or less worthy. No one ‘deserves’ anything!
The concept of they got what they deserved…is an illusion. There is no meaning in it. It is just a limited viewpoint.
It is meaning we are placing on something we see as outside of ourselves. But this is also an illusion as there is no outside.
The “i” that I feel I am, is the consciousness animating me. The separation I feel from another is an illusion. We are all cells in a giant earth body and it is only our limited perspective that stops us seeing the big picture of how it all works together. When we zoom out with the perspective of an astronaut, we see the earth is one body.
The rivers are like blood, carrying water and nutrients to the plants, animals, and our bodies which are mostly made up of this same water. The air I breathe in has been breathed out by the trees after breathing in your out breath. This is the lungs of the earth’s body. All the minerals making up our bodies come from the same earth from when our planet was formed and are just being recycled. It is the same basic stuff making up our bodies that is continuously being recycled and evolved into new bodies and forms. There is no separation.
When I think of myself as a single cell in a huge organism gone rogue into thinking it is somehow special or more or less worthy of other cells, it seems hilariously ridiculous. Yet with potentially devastating consequences as any cancer cell gone rogue.
Yet that is our reality. Take a look at instagram or any advertising campaign- “You need this”, “You are worth it” is the message we are sold. That is the illusion we have bought.
We are all the same in value, it is our functions that are different. We need to be different so that the larger body, community, country, planet functions.
As above so below. As each cell in our body has a different function, so too do we, yet each cell is just as important as each other. There is no concept of worthiness. That is something we created to sell more products.
So when I feel like I am unworthy or I need to prove myself, that I need to try harder to not be a failure, I remember self worth is an illusion and it’s not about me.
I shift my focus to zoom out to the whole planet and see myself as just one cell of mother earth’s body and send this my love and gratitude and help where I can.
