What’s my purpose?

There are so many spiritual teachings and self help books showing us how to discover our purpose and yet, when I ask the question of myself, the universe or God, I never receive an answer and I am sure I am not alone.

There are some lucky people who seem to have a clear understanding of who they are and why they are here, and then there is everyone else. We feel like we don’t really belong here and no matter how many times we ask the universe ‘what am I here for’, there is a deafening silence.

It’s easy to think there is something wrong with us, but I believe it to be perfectly normal, as purpose only makes itself clear at the end of a life. In hindsight.

There are reports of those who have had a near death experience (NDE) who talk about having a life review as part of their experience, in which their whole life flashes before them in exquisite details, including full-on emotions of their own and all those they have either hurt or helped. It is HERE, from this much higher perspective that it will all make sense. From HERE we have the opportunity to learn and consider all of our actions with the greatest of love and care present, so that our soul’s evolution will continue.

We look for a reason or a purpose because life often feels futile, yet it is in this searching and in the asking of the question ‘who am I’ that leads us to a greater understanding of life and a greater compassion with ourselves and each other.

As we are compelled on this journey of discovery, we begin to break down our walls of separation and notice how everything is actually connected and intertwined. Life can be likened to a beautiful tapestry. One thread may seem insignificant, yet without this colour, shape or texture, how much more duller the resulting picture. To pull out a thread before it has had a chance to complete it’s role in the artwork, would be to leave a gaping hole that other threads would need to try to mend. As they weren’t designed for the job the result may be patchy and not as graceful.

That is where trust comes in. When I struggle with trust, I often think of the entire cycle of evolution and how perfectly everything has evolved in what has to be an intelligent, conscious universe. When we wanted to see, eyes evolved, when we wanted to hear, ears evolved and so on.

With all of our current knowledge and intelligence, humans could not even come close to replicating what has evolved so perfectly on its own. This is not a haphazard, trial and error, survival of the fittest form of evolution. No, it is just too harmonious, too beautiful and too perfect. How is it that all creatures work perfectly in harmony with other life forms in ecosystems? These systems work as one, just as a beehive works as one mind. All bees knowing their role and working in harmony as one. Each individual bee is vital and important, yet they are all connected and needed for the hive to survive and thrive.

We may not know our purpose in life, but we can be assured that without our unique perspective, our unique colour, sound, truth, expression or vibration, the picture will not be as complete or beautiful.

I consider the tree breathing in our out breath of carbon dioxide as we breathe in it’s release of oxygen. Perfect! How the microbes carry nutrients to its roots as it provides sugars for them to eat. Perfect! Remove one component from this chain and the ecosystem fails.

Regenerative agriculture is now starting to understand the importance of healthy soil and that plants don’t just need Phosphorous, Nitrogen and Potassium to survive. There are chemical companies that tell farmers to plant seeds designed to withstand glyphosate such that the crop may be sprayed and only the weeds are killed. However, this practice is also killing the soil and all the microbes within it, which play a vital role in bringing nutrition and minerals to the plants roots and increasing the soil’s water holding capacity. We are now learning that it is much better to look after the microbes and keep them healthy to improve the health of the plants. Kill the microbes and the soil is now dead, requiring more and more chemicals to keep the plants alive. Not to mention how these chemicals are also killing the microbes in our own gut ecosystem and causing our immune systems to fail.

So what is our purpose? What is the microbes purpose or the purpose of any part of nature? They are vital and needed even if they are just doing their thing as nature and evolution intended.

We are all important and our unique perspective makes us special and vital, but so too everyone and everything else. All are needed and all are equally important. Kill one thing in an ecosystem and we all fall down and the sooner we realise just how connected and important we all are, the better for the whole universal ecosystem.
